Along the way, he meets and falls in love with Oey Yok Su, a beautiful Chinese girl who is also a skilled fighter. They also encounter many enemies and allies from various martial arts sects, such as the Shaolin Temple, the Wudang Mountain, the Beggar Clan, and the White Lotus Society.

The novel depicts the brutal atrocities committed by the Japanese soldiers against the Chinese civilians, such as massacres, rapes, tortures, and biological experiments. It also portrays the courage and sacrifice of the Indonesian fighters who risked their lives to defend their adopted homeland. The novel is considered as one of the most popular and influential works of Kho Ping Hoo, who is widely regarded as the master of silat (Indonesian martial arts) fiction.
